It is hard to say exactly what the origin of Salsa dancing is.  Partially because some use the term Salsa dancing

as a general term covering many dances and partially because Salsa is a mix of many influences.  Most however would give credit to Cuba as the founding country of this style dance.  French who moved to Cuba brought the Contra Dance (Country Dance) with them and this style dance began to mingle with Afro-Caribbean rhythms resulting in a unique dance later named by New Yorkers , Salsa.
